The Private Secretary’s Journal blurs the line between a fictional country, its king’s private secretary, and European historical and current events. The protagonist, Ian Köhler, is the private secretary to King Jonas of Dorstenland. Located in the North Sea, the fictitious island nation of Dorstenland surrounds itself with the United Kingdom to its left, Norway and Denmark to its right, and Germany to its south. The history of Dorstenland includes the unique cultural and linguistic influences of its German and British roots.
